Here is Commandment Five from our 10 Commandment coloring pages series. Feel free to copy and distribute this page to your Sunday School class or use it for your next Sunday School game.

Honoring your mother and father is a tough one for most kids. In today's world, it is easier to talk back and be defiant than it is to just do what you're told. Why?

Why Is This Commandment So Hard to Obey?

Many people blame it on the times we live in. The world is bad, but we as teachers and parents need to teach our kids what's right and what's not. Believe me, even if the kids know what's right and what's not, they still seem to rather do what they want than what their parents tell them to do or any adult for that matter.

I've worked with kids for a long time and I've had to get after a few that were not my own. I have been shocked many times when a child looks me right in the eye, then goes right ahead and does what I've just told them not too.

Use the 10 Commandment coloring page below to help you teach your class to honor (not just obey) their father and mother. May God bless you as you teach God's word.

Remind the kids that honoring is more than just obeying. It is obeying with a kind, loving heart that doesn't grouch about it on the inside or out.

Teaching kids about spiritual growth is as important if not more than teaching kids to feed themselves. After teaching the Ruth in the bible Sunday school lesson, you can use this Sunday school game to let the kids have fun while they are learning about spiritual growth.

To teach the class about spiritual growth, play this Sunday school game.

You'll only need a few things for this game. You can also play it with any number of children. Here's what you'll need:

    • cut out paper food items (carrots, apples, strawberries, pumpkins, corn, etc.)
    • printed out verses and words (list shown below)
    • tape
After you have cut out the food items, tape the words or verses (listed below) on the back and hide them around the room or area. Don't make them too hard to find - just hard enough for your age children.

For this example, let's say you have 12 kids in your class.

You'll need at least 2 paper food items for each child plus 12 more - a total of 36 food items (more for more kids).

Write the following on the back of the first 24 food items. You can add some of your own ideas too. You can also copy and paste so that you can print them out. Then, just cut and tape them on the back of the food items.

    • Bible verses
    • Prayer
    • helping others
    • sharing
    • going to Sunday school
    • bible school
    • youth meeting
    • attend church
    • read your bible
    • tell others about Jesus, God, and Heaven
    • invite people to church and youth meeting
    • talking to God
    • or any other things that will help the kids spiritual growth
Here are some bible verse suggestions you can add to the backs of some too:

    James 1:22 KJV
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.

    Proverbs 10:5 KJV
He that gathereth in summer is a wise son:
but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

    Philippians 4:13 KJV
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

You'll also need 12 things that will NOT help with spiritual growth. Below are just examples. Feel free to add your own.
    • using bad language
    • using the Lord’s name in vain
    • telling lies
    • disobeying
    • being jealous of what others have
    • stealing
    • talking back to parents and teachers
    • bullying
    • hurting people’s feelings on purpose
    • cheating
    • throwing trash down on church property

How to play this Sunday school game:

After you have cut out the foods, taped on the words and verses above, and hidden them, it is time to explain the rules.

Each child will walk around the room looking at each piece of food. As they read the back of the food, they can decide if it will help their spiritual growth or hurt it. Let each child pick up two foods, but be sure they don't pick up the bad foods.

Once the kids have gathered two good food items, let them come back to sit in a circle. Let the kids take turns telling what they found and how it can help their spiritual growth. This is important as it will let you step in and explain why it will help when needed.

After everyone has gone, talk about the bad foods they found and why it will hurt their spiritual growth.

Use your own ideas and verses that you've been working on to help encourage the kids in your Sunday school class.

Sunday School Games - Palm Sunday

As you will see (if you haven't already), the story of Palm Sunday is quite simple and short which makes it easy to turn into a game. First, you'll need to pick out key words you'll want to use.

We used the following words: donkey, walk or walked, Hosanna, and Jesus

Get the Palm Sunday - Sunday school lesson!

    What you'll need to do:

Before telling the story, you'll need to tell the kids which words to listen for in the story. Again, we used the words above. For smaller kids, you might just want to use two words and for older kids, you could add more.

To play this game as it ties into the story, you'll need to come up with some motions for each word. We used:

    • donkey - make donkey ears by placing each of your hands on either side of you head and waving them back and forth like donkey ears.
    • walk or walked - pat your knees to make a soft walking sound
    • Hosanna - put both hands in the air and gently wave them back and forth from side to side
    • Jesus - put both hands over your heart as a sign of love
As you read the story, the kids will listen for these words and make the motions. You may need to stop at the words and do the motions yourself. If needed, read the story again so the kids will be able to pick up on the words, do the motions, and learn the story better.

Instead of sitting, tell the kids the story as you walk around the room or even outdoors. You could have a special place ready with coats lying on the floor, fake palm branches for the kids to pick up and wave, and turned over tables.

As you read the story, make your way to each of these places to make the story come alive!

After you have finished the Sunday School lesson for Attributes of God - Get Organized, this Sunday School game will help reinforce your lesson. Sunday school games keep kids learning while having fun. When you have time, a game is a great way to reinforce what you've just taught.

    Get Organized! Sunday School Game
->->->Sign up for FREE Sunday school stuff on the right!->->->

Take a look at this verse before class as you will be teaching it to the kids:

    James 1:22 KJV

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

If you have small children, you can use only the first part of the verse.

What You'll Need for the Sunday School Game

To play the 'Get Organized!' game you'll only need an open place for the kids to stand and sit. You can also copy the bible verse above on a piece of paper or poster board for the kids to see.

Begin by having all the kids bunch up in the middle of the area. If possible, you could play this game outside on the green grass just like from the Sunday School lesson.

Tell the kids they need to listen and to hear what you are saying just like the verse above. The kids will need to hear what you say, then do it.

Depending on the size of the group, you can clap your hands together 1 to 5 times and have the kids get into those groups. For more kids, clap 5 to 10 times. For example, if you clap your hands together 3 times, the kids will need to get into groups of 3 sitting on the floor or grass. Any kids leftover can come to stand by you and you can let them clap next time.

You can keep clapping, letting the kids reorganize themselves. This game is so much fun to watch. The kids scramble around as they try to get into their groups.

Once seated, have the kids say the verse aloud.

Another version of this Sunday School game.

Have the numbers 1 to 4 taped to different walls. Put the number 1 on one wall, the number 2 on the next wall, and so on.

    Divide the kids into groups.

Print out the numbers 1 to 4 and cut them out. Place them inside a bowl or cup and give them a shake. Draw out a number and have the first group go to that number on the wall. Have all the kids say the verse.

Next, draw out the next number and have the next group race to that number on the wall. Keep going until all the kids have a chance to find a number on the wall. To make it more interesting, give each group a name and just call out which wall you want them to go to. This version of the game moves quicker and keeps the kids on their toes.

For example, name one group of kids the Genesis group and another the 'Exodus' group. Call out 'Genesis' go to number 2 or 'Exodus' go to number 4.

You could also just have one group and make all the kids go together to each number and say the verse.

Teaching kids bible verses are a very important part of Sunday School.

May God bless you as you teach kids the word of God.

One of the main purposes of the Romans 12 lesson is to reinforce to children that God will take care of us and if we get angry, we should stop and think before yelling or being mean to someone.

For this Sunday School game you'll need a rope of some sort, a ribbon or bandanna, and a piece of colored tape. A jump rope will work great for smaller classes. You'll also need some pretend food or if you serve snacks to your class, you could use real food. For larger classes, groups can take turns. Taking turns can be hard for some children, so be sure to remind them that we should be nice and slow to anger.

    James 1:19 KJV

19 ...let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

How to Play the Feed Your Enemy Sunday School Game

Divide the kids up into groups of two or three. You should have two groups per game. You will be doing a tug-of-war. Have a piece of tape or a chalk line on the floor so the kids will know where to pull the other team too.

Lay the jump rope on the floor. Measure to the center and tie the ribbon or bandanna. This will serve as your flag. Have one group stand on one side of the flag and the other group stand on the other.

When you're ready, have the kids pick up the rope and stand still. Be sure they are listening. Reinforce the bible verse where they should be quick to listen. When you say go, let the kids begin pulling. The team whose side crosses over the middle line must say the bible verse above.

The point of this game is to teach them to be slow to anger. Once they say the verse, allow them to give food to the other team just like the bible story 'Romans 12: Feed Your Enemy' talked about. If you wish, you can also allow them to pass out the drinks.

Before ending the game, try to divide the teams up again to allow all the kids a turn to say the verse and pass out the food and drinks.

Ask them what they remember from the game. You're looking for them to say...

    • be slow to anger
    • feed your enemy
    • let God take care of things for you
    • give your enemy drinks
    • be slow to speak
    • listen carefully
    • and other things that pertain to the verses and story

    Sunday School Games
Sunday School games can be a great way to teach kids something extra about the bible lesson or even help them learn a new bible verse. Here is a game that can be used by itself or in conjunction with the bible story - Enoch: Walking with God.

->->Sign Up for FREE Sunday School stuff on the right!->->

Sunday School Game - Walking the Rope

For this game, you can use a regular-sized jump rope, an extra long jump rope, or any type of rope you have. The game works best if the rope is on the thinner side. If you don't have a rope, a long piece of yarn works too!

Begin by stretching the rope flat on the floor. Have the kids line up behind one end of the rope. Before starting the game, decide whether you will be asking questions about the Sunday School lesson or if you will be teaching the kids a new verse.

How do you play the game?

The kids will try to walk on the rope from one end to the other without loosing their balance. Ask each child a question from the story or have them repeat a bible verse before 'walking with God' across the rope. Have the kids visualize that God is right beside them - maybe even have them pretend to hold God's hand as they walk.

After the first or second time through, change up the game a little bit and make the rope curvy like a snake, but still lying on the ground. If this is too easy, add some tape, about 18 inches apart, down the length of the rope. When the kids walk across this time, they must hop over the tape.

If you have time, let the kids take turns jumping the rope while saying their bible verse. This is very challenging!
