Sunday School Games - Palm Sunday

As you will see (if you haven't already), the story of Palm Sunday is quite simple and short which makes it easy to turn into a game. First, you'll need to pick out key words you'll want to use.

We used the following words: donkey, walk or walked, Hosanna, and Jesus

    What you'll need to do:

Before telling the story, you'll need to tell the kids which words to listen for in the story. Again, we used the words above. For smaller kids, you might just want to use two words and for older kids, you could add more.

To play this game as it ties into the story, you'll need to come up with some motions for each word. We used:

    • donkey - make donkey ears by placing each of your hands on either side of you head and waving them back and forth like donkey ears.
    • walk or walked - pat your knees to make a soft walking sound
    • Hosanna - put both hands in the air and gently wave them back and forth from side to side
    • Jesus - put both hands over your heart as a sign of love
As you read the story, the kids will listen for these words and make the motions. You may need to stop at the words and do the motions yourself. If needed, read the story again so the kids will be able to pick up on the words, do the motions, and learn the story better.

Instead of sitting, tell the kids the story as you walk around the room or even outdoors. You could have a special place ready with coats lying on the floor, fake palm branches for the kids to pick up and wave, and turned over tables.

As you read the story, make your way to each of these places to make the story come alive!
